Origin of the disciplinary sanction
The five place grid drop stems from a series of incidents during the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi, roughly fifteen months ago. While competing for Sauber, Bottas was involved in a first lap collision with Sergio Perez and a subsequent terminal accident with Kevin Magnussen at Turn 6. Because Bottas retired from the race due to the damage sustained in the second incident, stewards were unable to apply a standard in race time penalty and instead issued a grid drop for his next competitive appearance.
Regulatory timing and application
The sporting regulations have undergone revisions since the 2024 season, including a new provision that allows stewards to administer grid drops for the next event in which a driver participates within a twelve month period. However, FIA officials have confirmed that this change is not retroactive. Consequently, the original decision rendered on December 8, 2024, remains binding, forcing Bottas to serve the penalty at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, which marks his return to the grid with the new Cadillac entry.
License points and suspension risks
While the grid penalty remains active, Bottas has seen an improvement in his disciplinary record regarding penalty points. The five points he accrued during the Abu Dhabi incidents have expired, as they are automatically cleared from a driver's FIA Super Licence after twelve months. This removes any immediate threat of a race ban for the Finn, providing a clean slate in terms of license points as he begins his tenure with the American manufacturer.
