Persistence of Iranian Strategic Deterrence
United States intelligence and military officials have concluded that weeks of targeted strikes have failed to eliminate Iran's core military capabilities. According to assessments reported by The New York Times, the Islamic Republic has successfully retained a powerful deterrent, including approximately 40 percent of its prewar drone fleet. This survival of strategic assets suggests that the Iranian military anticipated high-intensity aerial campaigns and utilized sophisticated concealment methods to preserve its most critical offensive technologies.
Recovery of Concealed Missile Launchers
A significant development during the current two-week ceasefire, which began on April 8, has been the emergence of hidden military hardware. Officials cited in the report noted that more than 100 missile launcher systems, previously hidden in fortified caves and bunkers, have been recovered and returned to operational status. This active restoration process indicates that Iran’s command structure remains intact and is focused on reclaiming its operational capacity while active hostilities are paused.
Subterranean Salvage and Arsenal Projections
The Iranian military is currently engaged in extensive efforts to retrieve missiles buried under the rubble of depots and underground facilities targeted in earlier strikes. US officials estimate that once these recovery efforts are finalized, Iran could reclaim as much as 70 percent of its prewar missile arsenal. This high rate of recovery underscores the difficulty of permanently neutralizing a military infrastructure that is heavily reliant on deep-earth fortifications and decentralized storage.
