Since the opening of a Level 1 trauma center on the city's South Side in 2018, researchers have observed a nearly 4% reduction in firearm-related mortality within the immediate service area. Dr. Michael Poulson, a trauma surgery fellow and the study's lead author, noted that the strategic positioning of these facilities in communities most affected by gun violence is a primary driver of improved patient outcomes. Statistical Reductions in Transport Time and Travel Distance

The research team analyzed over 45,000 firearm-related incidents occurring across Chicago between 2010 and 2024 to determine how the new facility altered the emergency landscape. According to the data, shooting victims within the trauma center’s designated service area saw an average reduction in travel time of nearly ten minutes. Furthermore, the distance traveled to reach life-saving treatment decreased by approximately 3.4 miles on average. These shifts in logistics were unique to the South Side, as other regions of the city did not experience similar improvements in transport efficiency during the same period. The 3.9% decrease in mortality rates translates into a substantial number of lives preserved over the last several years.
