The Global Hierarchy of Aviation Spending

A study reported to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute indicates that a narrow group of five nations—the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and India—now accounts for 60% of all global defense spending. The United States remains the undisputed leader, with a 2024 defense budget of $997 billion, representing 37% of the total worldwide expenditure. China follows as the second-largest spender at $314 billion, focusing heavily on modernization through uncrewed platforms and stealth technology. Russia, despite its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, holds the third position with a $149 billion budget, while Germany and India round out the top five with $88.5 billion and $86.1 billion respectively.

Stealth Dominance and Fighter Disparities

In the realm of tactical aviation, the United States maintains a significant lead with approximately 2,358 fighter aircraft, including the world’s largest fleet of fifth-generation stealth platforms like the F-35 Lightning II. China has secured the second spot with 1,975 fighters, notably producing over 200 Chengdu J-20 "Mighty Dragon" stealth jets. Conversely, Russia’s fighter count stands at 1,008, though its advanced Su-57 "Felon" remains rare due to industrial sanctions restricting critical components. Germany and India continue to modernize their smaller fleets, with Germany recently ordering 35 F-35s to supplement its Eurofighter Typhoons and India considering both Russian and American options for its next-generation fighter programs.

Shifting Trends in Strategic Strike Capacity

In a notable shift in quantitative metrics, China has overtaken the United States in the total number of strategic bombers, fielding approximately 209 aircraft compared to the U.S. fleet of 140. However, the U.S. remains the only power possessing the B-2 Spirit, a dedicated fifth-generation stealth bomber, and the peerless B-52, which has remained operational for nearly a century. Russia holds the third position with 120 bombers, including the supersonic Tu-160 "Blackjack." While Germany and India do not possess traditional strategic bombers, both nations have invested in maritime strike capabilities, recently acquiring Boeing P-8A Poseidon jets for long-range reconnaissance and ordnance delivery.
