A Paradigm Shift in Long Range Air Defense
The Ukrainian Bulava drone unit reported a historic military achievement on April 4, 2026, when a pilot known by the callsign "Hulk" successfully downed two separate Russian Shahed drones from a distance of 500 kilometers. This operation marks the first time in the history of aerial warfare that a drone interceptor has been successfully controlled and utilized to strike targets at such an extreme range from the operator's starting location. By effectively expanding the operational radius of a single drone crew from the standard 20–30 km to 500 km, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are now able to saturate vast portions of the sky with minimal personnel on the ground.
The STING: A Specialized "Shahed Killer"
The mission was executed using the STING interceptor, a specialized, bullet-shaped drone developed by the "Wild Hornets" (Dyki Shershni) volunteer group. Codified by NATO, the STING is specifically engineered to outrun and ram Shahed suicide drones. It is capable of:
Speed: Exceeding 340 km/h.
Altitude: Operating at heights of up to 3 kilometers.
