A Historic Milestone for the Global Paralympic Movement

The return of the Winter Paralympics to Italy for the first time in two decades coincided with the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Winter Games. Hosted across Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from March 6 to 15, the 2026 event saw a massive international turnout, with China and the United States fielding the largest athletic delegations. Ukraine, despite the ongoing domestic challenges of war, managed to send the seventh largest team to the competition, marking the eighth time the nation has participated in a Winter Paralympic cycle.

Consistent Performance Under National Martial Law

Preparing for an elite international competition during a period of national conflict presented unique hurdles for the Ukrainian delegation. The National Paralympic Committee highlighted that these Games were the second consecutive cycle where training and performance were conducted under the provisions of martial law. According to the Committee, the athletes focused their efforts on 34 specific medal sets, competing primarily in Para biathlon, Para cross country skiing, and Para alpine skiing, which includes Para snowboarding.

Dominance in the Para Biathlon Arena

The core of Ukraine’s success at the 2026 Games was concentrated in the Para biathlon events, where the national team demonstrated world class proficiency. Out of 18 sets of medals available in this discipline, Ukrainian competitors claimed 16, including three gold, six silver, and seven bronze awards. This high yield positioned Ukraine as the top nation globally for total medals within the biathlon category, underscoring a strategic focus on endurance and precision sports that have historically been a strength for the country.
