Scaling Technological Warfare Capabilities
The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated a significant structural overhaul of the National Guard, signaling a shift toward specialized, technology-driven combat formations. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed on Tuesday that the government has authorized the creation of new regiments dedicated to unmanned systems, assault operations, and air defense. This move is designed to transition modern combat technologies from secondary support roles into primary, independent tactical units. By consolidating these high-tech assets into formalized regiments, the Ministry aims to improve the coordination and lethality of drone operations on the front lines.
Lessons from the Modern Battlefield
The decision to expand the National Guard's structure is a direct result of the evolving nature of the full-scale conflict with Russia. Klymenko noted that the reform is based on a continuous analysis of battlefield experience, where drones and localized air defense have become the dominant factors in tactical success. Previously, drone pilots and assault specialists operated in smaller teams embedded within broader brigades. The new departmentalization reflects a strategic need to scale these experiences, ensuring that specialized units have the specific training, equipment, and command structures necessary for high-intensity modern warfare.
A Dedicated Shield for Ukrainian Airspace
A cornerstone of the new organizational structure is the formation of a separate regiment tasked exclusively with the protection of national airspace. This dedicated air-defense formation within the National Guard is intended to provide a more flexible and responsive layer of protection against aerial threats, including cruise missiles and loitering munitions. As the conflict increasingly targets civilian and energy infrastructure, the Ministry’s goal is to improve the effectiveness of countering these threats by creating a centralized command for mobile and stationary air-defense assets that can operate independently of traditional army structures.
