The Controversy Over Political Zoning
The debate over political zoning in Kenya has intensified as members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) advocate for exclusive territory rights within their pre-election coalition. Proponents argue that zoning is essential to solidify a parliamentary majority and ensure effective governance after the 2027 elections. However, Odoyo Owidi, a prominent UDA politician and former chairperson of the Lake Basin Development Authority, has labeled the initiative as a selfish maneuver designed to protect incumbents from fair competition.
Allegations of "Free Tickets" and Market Premiums
In an exclusive interview, Owidi alleged that the primary drivers of the zoning push are leaders who have historically avoided competitive nominations. He claimed that by establishing ODM as the sole viable party in specific regions, these politicians ensure they receive "free tickets" to Parliament without facing a rigorous electoral process. Furthermore, he suggested that Governor Gladys Wanga is championing the move to increase the "premium" value of ODM tickets in her capacity as chairperson, thereby securing her own path to a second term.
The 50-50 Power Sharing Dispute
Parallel to the zoning debate is ODM’s demand for a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement with the current administration, which includes a push for the deputy president position. While some regional leaders have proposed Governor Wanga as a potential running mate for President William Ruto, Owidi dismissed the suggestion as politically unviable. He argued that Wanga lacks the significant support base required to deliver a decisive vote, noting that Ruto is more likely to retain incumbent DP Kithure Kindiki, whose regional voting bloc is more comparable to the total turnout in Luo Nyanza.
