A Strategic Refresh of the Supervisory Body
Switzerland’s largest lender is preparing for a significant reshuffling of its boardroom as it navigates a complex global financial landscape. In a statement released on Friday, UBS confirmed that veteran board members William Dudley and Jeanette Wong will not seek re-election at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. To fill these vacancies, the Board of Directors has put forward Agustín Carstens and Luca Maestri, two internationally recognized figures with deep roots in global regulation and corporate finance. This transition marks the latest phase in the bank's effort to align its leadership with the demands of modern banking oversight.
Tapping into Global Regulatory Authority
The nomination of Agustín Carstens brings an unprecedented level of central banking experience to the UBS board. Carstens, who concluded an eight year tenure as the General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in June 2025, is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on financial regulation. His career includes high level roles as the Governor of the Bank of Mexico and Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. According to UBS Chairman Colm Kelleher, Carstens' arrival will significantly strengthen the board’s ability to navigate the evolving international regulatory framework.
High Tech Financial Competency from Apple
Complementing the regulatory focus of Carstens is the nomination of Luca Maestri, a seasoned executive currently serving as the Vice President of Corporate Services at Apple. Maestri, who reported directly to CEO Tim Cook during his decade long tenure as Apple’s Chief Financial Officer, brings comprehensive competencies in global finance and operational management. His prior experience includes CFO roles at Xerox and Nokia Siemens Networks, as well as two decades at General Motors. Maestri’s background in large scale corporate transformations is expected to provide valuable insight as UBS continues its own multi year integration and modernization efforts.
