A Global Mandate for Freedom of Navigation

The United Arab Emirates has formally signaled that any resolution to the ongoing hostilities involving Iran must include ironclad guarantees for the Strait of Hormuz, according to Anwar Gargash. As the diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, Gargash maintains that the world’s most vital oil artery cannot be utilized as a tool for regional leverage or held hostage by any single nation. He emphasizes that securing this waterway is an essential component of a global economic mandate rather than a localized bargaining chip, insisting that freedom of movement through the strait be integrated into any final conflict settlement.

Concerns Over a Superficial Cessation of Hostilities

While Abu Dhabi expresses a desire for an immediate end to the war, Gargash warns that a premature ceasefire failing to tackle the root causes of instability would be counterproductive. According to Gargash, a deal that overlooks Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and its drone and missile proliferation would only establish a more dangerous and unpredictable Middle East. He argues that the region cannot afford an agreement that leaves the very weapons currently targeting Gulf infrastructure intact, as this would merely delay further escalation rather than ensuring long-term peace.

Strategic Backfire of Iranian Retaliatory Campaigns

The current conflict, which began on February 28 following a deadlock in nuclear negotiations, has seen the UAE targeted by Iranian strikes more frequently than any other Gulf state. However, Gargash notes that Iran’s strategy of hitting energy infrastructure and commercial centers to pressure Washington’s allies has largely failed. Instead of distancing themselves from the West, Gulf nations are moving closer to a security alignment with the United States. According to Gargash, these attacks are entrenching the American military role and expanding the regional footprint of Israel, contrary to Tehran's strategic objectives.
