Fatal Double Shooting in Chatham

The deadliest incident of the night occurred shortly before midnight in the Chatham neighborhood. According to Chicago Police, two men were standing outside near the intersection of 78th Street and Calumet Avenue when a group of five individuals approached them on foot. The group opened fire, striking a 37-year-old man in the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 44-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the deceased.

Englewood Gas Station Shooting

Earlier in the evening, around 10:45 p.m., gunfire erupted near a gas station at 67th and Halsted streets in Englewood. Investigators report that a 19-year-old man was attempting to enter a vehicle when an unidentified shooter opened fire. The man was struck in the foot, while a 22-year-old woman sitting inside the car was also hit by the gunfire. Both victims were stabilized at the University of Chicago Hospital and are listed in good condition. Preliminary reports suggest the male victim had been involved in a physical altercation shortly before the shooting occurred.

Violent Escalation on the CTA Red Line

Public transit safety is again under scrutiny following a double stabbing on a South Side CTA train. At approximately 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, an argument broke out between riders on a Red Line train near the 47th Street station. Police state that a passenger produced a sharp object and stabbed two men in the neck. Both victims were rushed to the hospital and are currently listed in fair condition. The attacker fled the scene, and police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the train car and station platforms.
