Recovery of Missing Person Debbie Ann Marrero
A months-long missing person investigation reached a somber conclusion on Monday with the recovery of human remains in Pittsylvania County. The Danville Police Department had been actively searching for 60-year-old Debbie Ann Marrero since she was first reported missing on November 20, 2025. Following a collaborative effort between several regional law enforcement agencies, investigators located Marrero’s body in the southeastern portion of the county. The discovery has shifted the focus of the investigation from a search for a missing person to a high-profile homicide inquiry.
A Critical Lead from Rockingham County
The breakthrough in the case originated on March 9, when investigators with the Danville Police Department received a significant lead from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office. Acting on this new information, Danville detectives joined forces with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office to execute a targeted search. The operation led authorities to the 1600 block of Mountain Hill Road, where the remains were identified as those of Marrero. The scene was processed for forensic evidence before the body was transported to the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke for a formal autopsy.
Arrests and Murder Charges
Shortly after the recovery of the remains, authorities announced the arrest of two Danville residents in connection with the death. Deborah Lynn Hurd, 63, and David Thomas Gunnell, 61, have both been formally charged with murder. The nature of the relationship between the suspects and the victim has not yet been disclosed by officials. Both Hurd and Gunnell were processed and are currently being held without bond at the regional detention center as they await their initial court appearance.
