Ankara Pursues Diplomatic De-escalation to Prevent Total War

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Saturday that Türkiye is maintaining high-level diplomatic contacts to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Following an informal meeting of the Organization of Turkic States, Fidan emphasized that Ankara is working to bridge the gap between warring factions to prevent a permanent regional collapse. The Foreign Minister highlighted recent conciliatory remarks from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding a "no-first-strike" policy as a stance that Türkiye has also consistently advocated. According to Fidan, while internal reservations exist within the Iranian political system regarding such statements, the pursuit of a ceasefire remains the only viable path forward for regional stability.

Fidan Denounces Israeli Strategy of Regional Instability

The Turkish government has characterized Israel’s current military operations as part of a wider, more dangerous expansionist and divisive agenda. Fidan asserted that Israel has adopted a deliberate strategy aimed at triggering civil wars and persistent conflicts throughout the Middle East to further its own strategic interests. In response, Türkiye has aligned itself with "friendly and brotherly" nations to promote a peace-oriented policy designed to counter this destabilizing approach. The Foreign Minister noted that under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Türkiye has managed to maintain its own security and stability despite being surrounded by active war zones and shifting geopolitical alliances.

Condemnation of Attacks on Neutral Third Countries

A central point of Fidan’s address was the strong condemnation of military strikes targeting nations not directly involved in the primary conflict. The Foreign Minister pointed to recent attacks directed at Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain as unacceptable escalations that endanger innocent civilian lives. Fidan argued that these strikes significantly increase the risk of the war spreading beyond its current borders, potentially drawing in the entire Gulf region. By targeting countries that have remained neutral, the combatants are disregarding international norms and making the prospect of a localized peace nearly impossible to achieve.
