A Multibillion Dollar Foundation for Reconstruction

President Donald Trump gaveled the first meeting of the Board of Peace at the newly renamed United States Institute of Peace headquarters, marking the transition of his 20-point peace plan into a functional international organization. During the 47 minute event, the president announced a $10 billion U.S. financial commitment intended for a 10 year rebuilding effort in conjunction with Congress. This foundation was immediately bolstered by more than $6.5 billion in collective pledges from a group of roughly two dozen member nations. Notably, the United Arab Emirates committed $1.2 billion, while Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait each pledged $1 billion to the recovery of the Palestinian enclave.

Oversight of the United Nations and Global Diplomacy

A core tension of the summit involved the Board of Peace’s relationship with existing international institutions. Trump described the body as the most prestigious board ever assembled and claimed its work would strengthen the United Nations. However, he also specified that the board would effectively oversee the U.N. to ensure it operates properly, a move that critics argue has no basis in the U.N. Charter. This shift comes as the United States remains roughly $4 billion in arrears on its U.N. dues. While some leaders like Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed the board as a way to wake up an agonizing giant, others expressed concern that the organization is designed to supersede traditional diplomatic channels.

Formation of the International Stabilization Force

Security arrangements for the post-conflict period were a primary focus of the meeting. U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers, the appointed commander of the new International Stabilization Force or ISF, confirmed that five nations have officially committed troops to the mission. Indonesia has pledged up to 8,000 soldiers and will serve as the deputy commander of the force, while Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania also offered military or police personnel. Additionally, Egypt and Jordan have agreed to train a new Palestinian police force, which currently has 2,000 applicants according to High Representative for Gaza Nickolay Mladenov. This force is intended to maintain order and ensure demilitarization once active hostilities fully cease.
