Legal Proceedings Against Istanbul Mayor Face Immediate Obstruction
The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu began under high tension on Monday morning, only for the judge to suspend the hearing within fifteen minutes of its commencement. The 54-year-old mayor, who has been detained since March 19 of last year, appeared before the court alongside more than 400 other defendants. Proceedings were halted after defense lawyers questioned why the witness list had been leaked to pro-government media outlets before being shared with the legal defense team. This procedural friction led to the clearing of the courtroom and a temporary suspension of the session until the early afternoon.
Massive Indictment Targets Opposition Leadership and Municipal Staff
Turkish prosecutors have leveled a staggering 142 offenses against İmamoğlu within a 4,000-page indictment, seeking a total prison sentence of 2,430 years. The charges include graft, embezzlement, and espionage, with the prosecution characterizing the mayor’s influence over his administration as a sprawling criminal network. Among the defendants are numerous members of his municipal team, as the state attempts to frame the Istanbul metropolitan government as a hub of illicit activity. The sheer scale of the trial necessitated the construction of a new, specialized courtroom, though the facility remained unfinished as the trial opened.
Political Coup Allegations from Republican People’s Party Leadership
Özgür Özel, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), was present at the hearing and labeled the case a "conspiratorial attempted coup" by the Erdoğan administration. İmamoğlu was jailed on the same day he was designated as the CHP’s presidential candidate, a timing that many observers believe was calculated to derail his political momentum. According to Özel, the trial serves as a mechanism to prevent the next government from forming, targeting the one politician widely viewed as capable of defeating the incumbent president at the ballot box.
