Diplomatic Damage Control in New Delhi
Minister McClay, who signed the agreement on Monday night, 27 April 2026, was forced to address the viral comments while on Indian soil.
The "Tsunami" Barb: In a video circulating online, Shane Jones stated his party would "never accept" the deal, claiming it would lead to "unfettered immigration" and a "butter chicken tsunami."
The Response: McClay told Indian reporters that while Jones is entitled to freedom of speech, his views are a "small minority view" and do not represent the wider New Zealand public.
Assurance to Community: McClay emphasized that Indian New Zealanders are "valued" and make a "big contribution" to the nation, dismissing the rhetoric as something they should not be worried about.
