A Vital Opening for Peace

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has voiced strong support for President Donald Trump’s decision to prolong the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, characterized the ongoing effort to de-escalate the conflict as a complex process that requires significant continuity to succeed. Grossi noted that the extension provides a necessary opportunity for peace to take root before hostilities potentially resume. According to Grossi, maintaining this diplomatic window is essential for the long-term stability of the region.

The Necessity of Nuclear Oversight

As a candidate for the next UN Secretary-General, Grossi emphasized that any future peace agreement must be anchored in rigorous international monitoring. He warned that any deal failing to include the IAEA in an enforcement and oversight capacity from the very beginning would result in a mere illusion of an agreement. Grossi asserted that verifying Iran’s nuclear program is the only way to ensure that a diplomatic resolution remains credible and sustainable. According to Grossi, without these safeguards, the international community cannot be certain of Tehran’s compliance.

Creating Space for Strategic Dialogue

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also signaled his approval of the U.S. announcement through his official spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric. Guterres believes that the extension of the truce creates critical space for high-level diplomacy and the building of trust between Washington and Tehran. The Secretary-General’s office encouraged all involved parties to maintain the current momentum and avoid any provocative actions that might jeopardize the existing ceasefire. According to Dujarric, the goal is to utilize this time to engage in constructive negotiations for a lasting resolution.
