A Four-Way Friendship Defined by Tragedy

Carole Radziwill’s connection to the Kennedy family was far from peripheral. Married to Anthony Radziwill from 1994 until his death in 1999, Carole was part of a tight-knit foursome with John and Carolyn. The two couples famously spent summers together in the Hamptons and supported one another through Anthony’s grueling battle with fibrosarcoma. In her 2005 memoir, What Remains, Carole detailed the harrowing period in 1999 when Anthony lost his cousin to a plane crash on July 16, only to succumb to his own illness three weeks later on August 10.

The Producer’s Defense: Focus on the Bessette Sisters

Despite Carole’s husband, Anthony, being portrayed in the series by Erich Bergen, executive producer Brad Simpson clarified that Carole was not included due to time constraints and narrative priorities. In a March 2026 interview, Simpson explained that the writers chose to emphasize Carolyn’s relationship with her sister, Lauren Bessette (who also perished in the 1999 crash), to give the character more depth. "You have to make decisions," Simpson noted, suggesting that including every member of the couple’s expansive social circle would have diluted the central focus of the 43-minute episodes.

Carole Radziwill’s Stance: "At Peace" with Misrepresentation

While Radziwill has not directly criticized the production for her absence, she has expressed a weary detachment from the constant "reinvention" of her friends' lives. Writing on her Substack in February 2026, she noted that the story of John and Carolyn is often "embroidered" with details by people who weren't there. Although she stated she would not be watching the FX series, she expressed that she is "at peace" with the public's fascination, encouraging viewers to "fall in love with them" through the screen while acknowledging the vast difference between TV drama and the reality she lived.
