A Childhood Forged in the Cultural Revolution
Born in 1965, Zhang Xin’s early life was defined by the stark socioeconomic constraints of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution. She describes a childhood surrounded by a "gray, expressionless" environment, a period of extreme privation that offered little hint of her future as a global business icon. These early experiences in mainland China established a baseline of resilience that would later define her aggressive and innovative approach to international business and urban design.
The Hong Kong Factory Years and Educational Pivot
In 1980, Zhang moved to Hong Kong, where she spent five years working on factory assembly lines. Working six days a week, she practiced extreme fiscal discipline to save for an education abroad. This period of manual labor served as the financial engine for her relocation to the United Kingdom, where she eventually earned degrees from the University of Sussex and the University of Cambridge. This transition from the factory floor to the elite halls of British academia provided her with the Western financial perspective necessary to navigate the complexities of global markets.
Building Beijing and the SOHO China Era
Returning to China, Zhang co-founded SOHO China, a firm that would become synonymous with the country’s modern architectural identity. From 1995 to 2015, during the most intense period of urbanization in history, Zhang spearheaded projects that moved away from traditional block housing toward avant-garde, iconic structures. Her collaboration with world-renowned architects, such as the late Zaha Hadid on the Galaxy SOHO project, earned her the nickname "the woman who built Beijing," as she turned the city into a hub of futuristic commercial real estate.
