Aerial Assault Triggers Thai Border Spillover

The escalating conflict within Myanmar crossed into Thai sovereign territory on April 20 when a bomb from an air raid landed in the Mae Hong Son province. According to local authorities, Myanmar’s air force deployed Yak-130 and MiG-29 fighter jets at approximately 11 am to conduct strikes against a Karen National Union (KNU) medical facility and residential structures. The target area in Karen State sits roughly 500 meters from the international boundary, opposite the Mae Sam Laep sub-district, creating an immediate and volatile risk to Thai civilians residing along the Salween River.

Emergency Evacuation of Ban Mae Sam Laep

Upon the impact of the ordinance near the Salween River, the 36th Ranger Forces Regiment and local administrative officials initiated a rapid response to safeguard the population. Thai residents living near the strike zone in Ban Mae Sam Laep were moved to a designated safety zone in Huai Kong Kat village. The landing of the bomb caused significant panic among the local community, as the physical proximity of the Myanmar military’s aerial campaign made the threat to Thai life and property indisputable.

Concentrated Bombing Campaign in Karen State

The air strikes involved a reported total of nine bombs dropped around the villages of U Mi Tha and U Su Tha within the Hpapun Township of Myanmar. While the primary objective appeared to be the destruction of KNU-linked infrastructure, including a local hospital, the lack of precision resulted in the dangerous stray ordinance crossing the border. As of the latest reports, the specific number of casualties or the full extent of the structural damage within the Myanmar villages remains unverified due to the ongoing instability in the region.
