Federal Indictment of Sworn Law Enforcement Officer
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas has moved forward with a federal indictment against Christian Estrada, a veteran trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Estrada, 39, was arrested in Laredo on January 8 following a comprehensive undercover operation led by the FBI. The charges, which include the coercion and enticement of a minor, have sent shockwaves through the regional law enforcement community. Upon his arrest, the Texas DPS immediately suspended Estrada as they launched a parallel administrative investigation into his conduct while on duty.
Anatomy of the FBI Undercover Sting in Laredo
The investigation into Estrada began in April 2025 when an FBI online undercover employee initiated contact with a Telegram user operating under the pseudonym "dopehound." Over several months, the user allegedly expressed repeated sexual interest in a fictitious 12-year-old girl and requested nude imagery. According to the criminal complaint, the interaction escalated as the user began communicating directly with an undercover agent posing as the child. Authorities describe the nature of these communications as classic "sexual grooming," intended to arrange a physical meeting for sexual activity.
Digital Footprints and Identification via Social Media
Federal investigators successfully unmasked the identity of the "dopehound" account by tracing digital records obtained from various platforms, including Reddit. These leads pointed directly to Estrada, who was stationed as a sworn trooper in Laredo. During a search of Estrada’s residence on the day of his arrest, agents reported that the suspect acknowledged the Telegram account belonged to him and admitted that biographical details within the online profiles matched his personal life. This admission of ownership has become a cornerstone of the federal government's case against him.
