A Confrontation Over Billing and Recognition

According to Howard, the tension began at the 2007 Venice Film Festival during the promotion of The Brave One, a psychological thriller in which he starred alongside Jodie Foster. Howard questioned why his name did not appear "above the title" alongside Foster’s. When he confronted Silver, the producer allegedly informed Howard that he was not the star of the project and would likely only be considered for supporting categories during awards season.

Howard admits his reaction was explosive. He recalled telling Silver that if he ever spoke to him in that manner again, he would "knock his teeth out." The actor notes that Susan Downey, wife of Iron Man lead Robert Downey Jr., was a co-producer on that film alongside Silver, creating a direct professional link between the confrontation in Venice and the production offices of the nascent Marvel Studios.

The Financial and Professional Fallout

The timeline Howard presents suggests a swift professional retribution. Just eight months after the Venice incident, Howard was informed he would not be returning for Iron Man 2. While Howard was the first actor officially cast in the original 2008 film—initially earning more than Robert Downey Jr.—his replacement by Don Cheadle remains one of the most famous casting shifts in superhero cinema history.

At the time, reports suggested that director Jon Favreau was dissatisfied with Howard’s performance and sought to minimize his role in the sequel. This creative shift would have necessitated a significant pay cut for Howard, which he reportedly refused. Howard now frames these financial negotiations as a secondary symptom of the "aggression" he displayed during the dispute with Silver.
