Challenges of the 50-50 Power Split

The 2026 season introduced the most radical power unit overhaul in decades, featuring a balance that is roughly 50% electric and 50% internal combustion power. This shift has introduced significant technical hurdles; drivers are frequently required to lift off the throttle early and coast into high-speed corners—a technique used to allow the combustion engine to recharge the hybrid battery. Drivers, including New Zealand’s Liam Lawson, have noted that these constraints make the cars difficult to handle and can detract from the "bravery" typically associated with top-tier open-wheel racing.

Scheduling the Path to Consensus

The FIA described the London session as a period of "constructive dialogue on difficult topics," acknowledging the high stakes and competitive friction between stakeholders. To resolve these technical friction points, the governing body has mapped out a rigorous schedule leading up to the Miami Grand Prix in May:

15 April: Sporting Regulations meeting.

16 April: Secondary technical session.
