The Fall of the Supreme Leader and Senior Advisers

The most significant blow to the Iranian establishment occurred on February 28, when a coordinated U.S.-Israeli air strike targeted the compound of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The 86 year old leader, who had maintained an absolute grip on the nation since 1989, was killed in the blast. The same wave of strikes claimed the life of Ali Shamkhani, a pivotal figure in Iran’s nuclear and security policymaking who had previously survived attempts on his life during earlier hostilities in June. These deaths represent the end of a three decade era of ideological and military entrenchment against Western interests.

Decapitation of the Civilian Intelligence and Security Council

The campaign continued into mid March, systematically targeting the civilian and intelligence leadership. On March 17, Ali Larijani, the veteran secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, was killed alongside his son in the Pardis area. Larijani was a central architect of Iran’s foreign policy and a former nuclear negotiator. Within twenty four hours, Israeli forces also eliminated Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib. As a hardline cleric and protege of the late Supreme Leader, Khatib’s removal disrupts the internal surveillance and intelligence gathering capabilities of the Islamic Republic during a time of total war.

Systematic Dismantling of the Revolutionary Guards Command

Iran’s elite military wing, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has faced a catastrophic loss of its leadership tier. Mohammad Pakpour, the commander in chief of the IRGC, was killed in the initial February 28 strikes in Tehran. This marks the second time the IRGC has lost its top commander in less than a year, following the death of his predecessor, Hossein Salami, in 2025. Additionally, Gholamreza Soleimani, who led the Basij paramilitary force responsible for internal security, was killed on March 17, further weakening the government's ability to enforce domestic authority.
