Deterrence Strategy: Raising the Cost of Conflict
Defence Minister Wellington Koo emphasized that Taiwan's security relies on shifting Beijing’s internal calculations. By strengthening its own military capabilities, Taiwan aims to make the "assessment of a successful invasion very low" for Chinese leadership. Koo argued that if Taiwan’s defense growth outpaces or matches China's expansion, the likelihood of conflict decreases, effectively pushing back any potential "invasion date" indefinitely.
Contrasting Intelligence Assessments
The Minister's comments follow a U.S. intelligence report released Wednesday, which struck a measured tone regarding the 2027 flashpoint.
U.S. Assessment: Beijing currently seeks to control the island without using force and is not definitively planning an invasion for 2027.
Taiwan’s View: Regardless of a specific date, the unabated military spending and frequent drills near the island mean the threat remains "very serious."
