Investigating a High-Speed Regulatory Breach
A record-equalling performance at the Tour of Flanders has been overshadowed by a legal investigation into the conduct of the lead peloton. The East Flanders public prosecutor confirmed to BBC Sport that authorities are reviewing an incident where up to 20 cyclists, including eventual winner Tadej Pogacar, bypassed a red light at a level crossing. The breach occurred with more than 200km remaining in the race as the front group pursued early leaders. According to Belgian legal standards, the riders involved could face financial penalties ranging from 320 euros to 4,000 euros, alongside potential eight-day driving bans.
The Athlete’s Defense and On-Track Confusion
In his post-race remarks, Pogacar defended the group's actions by highlighting the lack of adequate warning provided by race officials. The 27-year-old Slovenian explained that officials appeared in the middle of the road only 10 meters before the tracks, making it physically impossible to stop the high-velocity group safely in such a short distance. Pogacar admitted to initial confusion, stating he briefly suspected the presence of protesters on the course. Despite the controversy, the world champion maintained his focus to execute a tactically superior race against his primary rival, Mathieu van der Poel.
Climbing the All-Time Monument Leaderboard
The victory marks a significant milestone in Pogacar's career, drawing him level with seven other legends who have secured three wins at the prestigious Belgian event. Furthermore, this win represents his 12th Monument title, moving him clear of Roger de Vlaeminck for second place on the all-time list. Currently, only Eddy Merckx, with 19 titles, stands above the Slovenian. According to cycling historians, Pogacar’s dominance in both Milan-San Remo and Flanders this season places him in a rare position to sweep the most significant one-day events in the sport.
