A Historic Surge in Global Defense Sales
The Swiss defense industry experienced a period of unprecedented expansion in 2025, as war materiel exports jumped 43% compared to the previous fiscal year. According to data released by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), domestic firms exported equipment valued at CHF948.2 million ($1.2 billion). This surge reflects a broader global trend of increased military spending and highlights Switzerland’s specialized role in the international arms market, despite the country’s longstanding tradition of political neutrality.
Germany Leads Growing European Demand
European nations remain the primary consumers of Swiss military technology, with Germany consolidating its position as the top importer. In 2025, German purchases accounted for CHF386.4 million of total exports, nearly triple the volume of the next largest buyer. Other significant European partners included Hungary, Italy, and Luxembourg, which combined for over CHF170 million in acquisitions. The United States rounded out the top tier of buyers, importing CHF94.2 million worth of Swiss materiel, primarily focused on high-precision components and small arms.
Ammunition and Armoured Vehicles Drive Growth
The composition of Swiss exports reveals a heavy reliance on heavy materiel and consumables. Ammunition accounted for the largest share of deliveries at 43.2%, illustrating the high demand for Swiss-manufactured ordnance in international training and defense stockpiles. Armoured vehicles represented nearly a quarter of all exports at 23.6%, followed by weapons of various calibres at 10.3%. Other notable exports included fire control equipment, explosives, and specialized components for combat aircraft, reflecting the diverse technical capabilities of the Swiss manufacturing sector.
