NATO's diplomatic blow
According to the 2026 Trust Barometer, public confidence in NATO has dropped to 47%, down from 57% in the previous year. Analysts suggest this decline is a direct result of an intense and unprecedented "NATO crisis" that occurred during the survey period. Björn Rönnstrand of the Swedish Media Academy noted that a military and diplomatic conflict between two unnamed NATO allies over Greenland has severely tarnished the alliance's image in Sweden. Despite the dip, NATO remains more trusted than many domestic political institutions, maintaining a ranking alongside the UN.
A surge in institutional traditionalism
In contrast to the international alliance, Swedish domestic and traditional institutions are seeing a resurgence in public favor.
The Police: Remain the most trusted institution in the country at 75%.
The Armed Forces: Confidence holds steady at 69%, reflecting a continued focus on national defense.
