Chaos on the Frontlines and Intercepted Communications
Ukrainian reconnaissance units, specifically the Bureviy Brigade, have intercepted dozens of radio transmissions revealing immediate panic among Russian forces following the shutdown. Russian soldiers were recorded complaining that their connection was "completely gone," forcing them to revert to primitive communication methods such as radios, physical cables, and even carrier pigeons. This digital blackout directly impacted the transmission of real-time drone footage, which is essential for correcting artillery fire and conducting precision strikes.
Immediate Tactical Gains for Ukrainian Forces
The communications breakdown created a window of opportunity for Kyiv's defenders. In the days following the February 4 deactivation, Ukrainian forces managed to recapture approximately 77 square miles of territory in the country's southeast. Aerial reconnaissance operators noted a drastic drop in Russian mortar fire and first-person view (FPV) drone attacks, as unit coordination became increasingly difficult for the occupying forces.
The Proliferation of Illicit Starlink Units
By the third year of the invasion, Starlink had become the "backbone of connectivity" for both sides. Despite efforts to restrict Russian access, Moscow's troops had acquired thousands of terminals through third-party countries and even established shops in occupied cities like Kreminna. Ukrainian soldiers reported finding Starlink devices at nearly every Russian position along the contact line, sometimes in higher numbers than their own units possessed.
