Drawing Inspiration From the World Champions
The global success of the Springboks has provided a tactical and psychological roadmap for Stellenberg High School’s recent ascent. Head of Sports Andras Molnar credits the innovative methods of Rassie Erasmus for shifting the school’s perspective on what is achievable. Beyond tactical execution, the program has embraced the mental resilience and "purpose driven" play popularized by the national side. By fostering a culture where players understand who they are playing for, Stellenberg has developed a competitive edge that allows them to compete with schools possessing significantly larger historical profiles.
Breaking the Southern Suburbs Dominance
Stellenberg’s rise is punctuated by a series of landmark victories against the traditional heavyweights of the Western Cape. Last season, the school achieved a rare clean sweep of the four prestigious Southern Suburbs schools: Wynberg, Bishops, Rondebosch, and SACS. This momentum has carried into 2026, highlighted by a historic 20, 19 victory over Paarl Gimnasium just two weeks ago. This first ever win against the Paarl giants serves as the ultimate validation of a building phase that began in 2017, when the school first set its sights on becoming the dominant force in the Northern Suburbs.
A Ground Up Development Strategy
A key component of the Stellenberg "blueprint" is the deliberate focus on lower level teams rather than just the first XV. Director of Rugby Dupi du Preez and his staff implemented a structure where specialist forwards and backline coaches are assigned to every team from U14E through to U19A. By ensuring that the "E teams" receive the same quality of coaching as the "A teams," the school has created a snowball effect of talent retention. This internal development pathway allows the school to compete with institutions that offer high value bursaries by keeping local primary school talent within the Stellenberg system.
