A Damning Audit of Southern Lawlessness

The State of Israel’s internal watchdog has released a comprehensive report that paints a bleak picture of the security and administrative reality in the Negev desert. The State Comptroller’s findings indicate that the region is currently plagued by widespread criminal activity that the state has failed to curb, ranging from environmental regulation violations to systemic fraud. Most notably, the report details how local contractors are systematically forced to pay "protection" money to criminal organizations to operate, a practice that has become so embedded that it functions as an unofficial tax on development.

Bennett Assails Government Over Loss of Sovereignty

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett issued one of the most stinging rebukes of the current administration, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir of effectively ceding the territory. Bennett characterized the current situation as "complete anarchy," citing extreme examples such as gunfire directed toward Air Force bases in the south. He argued that under the current coalition, the Negev has lost its Israeli character, asserting that the only remedy is a total replacement of the government to restore the basic principles of law and order that have historically anchored the state.

Protection Rackets and the Collapse of Personal Security

Yisrael Beytenu party chairman Avigdor Liberman echoed these concerns, stating that the "October 7 government" has presided over a total collapse of internal governance. Liberman highlighted the findings on polygamy and the resulting national insurance fraud as symptoms of a state that has stopped enforcing its own laws. He emphasized that the ordinary citizen has been abandoned to face illegal weaponry and exorbitant racketeering alone. According to Liberman, the comptroller’s report merely formalizes the fear and lack of personal security that residents of the south have reported for years.
