National Milestone in Digital Identification
South Africa has officially reached a critical infrastructure milestone with 100 bank branches now enabled to process Smart ID applications. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber confirmed on Wednesday that the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) met its target for the end of the 2025/26 financial year, marking a 44% expansion in service access within just 21 days. This achievement is part of a broader digital transformation strategy intended to modernize the identification process through a public-private partnership with the nation's major retail banks. The minister noted that over 25,000 IDs have already been processed through these specialized branches in the three weeks since the latest phase of the launch.
Standard Bank’s Strategic Expansion
Standard Bank has emerged as a primary driver of this initiative, now offering Smart ID services at 30 branches across the country. This expansion follows the successful addition of four new branches in March, bringing the bank’s total footprint to a significant portion of the national network. The service structure includes seven original pilot branches established in 2015, which continue to operate on an online-only application basis, alongside 23 newer locations that utilize an integrated in-branch digital system. These newer sites allow customers to complete the entire process, from fingerprint scanning and photography to final document collection, within the banking environment.
The Role of New Market Entrants
The rapid acceleration of the Smart ID rollout has been heavily influenced by the entry of Capitec into the program. As a fundamental part of the current drive, Capitec opened 67 Smart ID branches in a single month, currently making it the largest contributor to the DHA partnership. Additionally, the network is set to grow further as First National Bank (FNB) began opening its first enabled branches this week. This competitive participation among major financial institutions is central to the government’s medium-term goal of activating 1,000 Smart ID-enabled branches by the end of the 2028/29 financial year.
