The "Odd-Even" Rationing System
In a move reminiscent of its 2022 economic crisis, Sri Lanka will now issue fuel based on vehicle license plate numbers. CPC Chairman S. Rajakaruna confirmed that vehicles with odd-numbered plates will be allowed to refuel only on odd-numbered dates, with a similar rule for even numbers. This system is designed to "halve the lines" at pumping stations that have stretched for blocks across Colombo and other major cities. The government has also shuttered schools, universities, and non-essential state offices every Wednesday, declaring it a permanent weekly holiday to reduce national fuel consumption.
Strategic Tenders and Emergency Crude Purchases
To bridge the immediate deficit, the Sri Lankan government has authorized emergency spot purchases and issued new tenders for:
36,000 metric tons of petrol.
37,000 metric tons of diesel.
