Energy Security as a Bilateral Anchor
At the core of the discussions was Indonesia’s role as a stabilized provider of fossil fuels. President Lee emphasized that Indonesia’s consistent supply of LNG and coal is "reassuring" for South Korea, which remains one of the world's top importers of these resources. In 2025 alone, South Korea imported approximately 2.1 million tons of LNG from Indonesia. The leaders pledged to launch a high-level energy security dialogue to insulate their respective economies from supply chain disruptions and price shocks fueled by regional wars.
The KF-21 Fighter Jet Milestone
A significant portion of the summit was dedicated to the decade-long joint development of the KF-21 fighter jet. The leaders confirmed that the project remains on track for its scheduled completion in June 2026. While no new defense contracts were signed, the joint statement outlined future cooperation on the "IF-21" follow-up project and potential sales of the aircraft to Jakarta. South Korean officials also indicated that Indonesia is expected to finalize outstanding payments for the development program by the end of 2026, resolving a long-standing point of financial negotiation.
Industrial Complementarity and New Growth
President Prabowo characterized the relationship as a "natural partnership," citing the synergy between South Korea’s advanced technological infrastructure and Indonesia’s vast natural resources and market size.
