Undercover operation in Somerset West

A 51 year old suspect is in custody following a high stakes bribery sting executed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Tuesday afternoon. The operation took place at Watercress Mall in Somerset West, where law enforcement officials intercepted the suspect during a planned delivery of illicit funds. The sting was the culmination of an undercover investigation triggered by a senior municipal official who acted with integrity by rejecting the bribe and immediately alerting the authorities to the criminal proposal.

Seizure of illicit assets

During the arrest, police officers seized a substantial amount of physical evidence linked to the attempted bribery. Law enforcement recovered 1.4 million rand in cash, which was allegedly intended to influence the outcome of a municipal investigation. In addition to the currency, police confiscated a vehicle and a mobile phone used by the suspect. These items have been processed as evidence to support the state's case regarding the attempt to subvert local government oversight through financial inducement.

Allegations of tender fraud interference

The suspect, identified as a service provider for the City of Cape Town, allegedly offered the multimillion rand sum in exchange for the termination of a tender fraud probe. The municipal official targeted by the bribe was reportedly in a position to influence or halt investigations into irregularities surrounding city contracts. By attempting to buy the silence or cooperation of a senior staff member, the suspect sought to protect his business interests from the legal consequences of alleged fraudulent activity within the municipality's procurement systems.
