A Fateful Thirteen Seconds in Cortina

On February 8, 2026, just 13 seconds into her highly anticipated women’s downhill run at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn’s comeback story took a catastrophic turn. Vonn clipped a gate with her right arm, causing her to spin mid-air before slamming into the icy slope at high speed. The 41-year-old was immediately airlifted from the course in Cortina d’Ampezzo as her screams of pain echoed through the broadcast. While initial reports cited a complex tibia fracture, Vonn has since revealed that the true extent of the damage was a life-altering medical emergency.

The "Fasciotomy" That Saved a Limb

Following the impact, Vonn developed acute compartment syndrome in her left leg—a condition where internal pressure from bleeding and swelling reaches critical levels, cutting off blood flow to muscles and nerves. Without immediate intervention, the tissue dies, leading to permanent damage or the necessity of amputation. Vonn credits Colorado-based surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett with saving her leg by performing an emergency fasciotomy, a procedure where the leg is surgically "filleted" open on both sides to relieve pressure. Ironically, Hackett was only present at the Games to assist with a torn ACL Vonn had sustained in January; his proximity allowed him to perform the six-hour limb-salvage surgery that prevented a total loss.

A Litany of Fractures and a Year of Rehab

The medical toll of the crash is staggering. Beyond the life-threatening compartment syndrome, Vonn suffered a complex tibia fracture, a fractured fibular head, and a fractured tibial plateau in her left leg. Additionally, she broke her right ankle in the collision, leaving her currently confined to a wheelchair as neither leg can bear weight. Following multiple surgeries in Italy and the United States, as well as a necessary blood transfusion to combat severe blood loss, Vonn was finally discharged from the hospital on February 23, 2026. Doctors estimate it will take at least one year for her bones to fully heal before they can even address her pre-existing ACL rupture.
