A Tragic Assault on Ahmet Koyuncu High School

A violent incident unfolded in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa on April 14, when a young man entered his former school and opened fire indiscriminately. Şanlıurfa Governor Hasan Şıldak reported that the suspect, born in 2007, utilized a shotgun to target individuals in the school corridors shortly before the end of a recess period. The attack has left the local community in mourning and the regional government scrambling to investigate the security breach at a facility previously deemed to be at a low risk for violence.

The Toll of the Random Shooting

According to official figures provided by the Governor’s office, the attack resulted in 16 non-fatal injuries. The victims include 10 students, four teachers, one police officer, and one worker from the school canteen. While the majority of the injured are being treated at Siverek State Hospital, four individuals—specifically two teachers and two students—were transferred to city center facilities in Şanlıurfa due to their health conditions being assessed as moderate. Governor Şıldak confirmed that, as of the latest update, there have been no fatalities among the victims.

Eyewitness Accounts from the School Hallway

Students and witnesses described a scene of sudden terror as the assailant moved through the building. One injured student, Ömer Furkan Sayar, recounted that the attacker entered his classroom and fired approximately four to five times without speaking. Sayar and a classmate were forced to jump out of a window to escape the gunfire after seeing two other students shot. Eyewitnesses near the school reported hearing shots as soon as the teenager entered the premises, followed by a frantic evacuation of the building as police units arrived on the scene.
