The Commercialization of Illicit Digital Archives

A judicial decision in Singapore has concluded the case of a young man who transformed a small purchase of illicit media into an extensive commercial enterprise. Gregory Seow Rui Jie began his activities in early 2023 after discovering censored nude images on the microblogging site Tumblr. What started as a personal acquisition for S$50 quickly escalated into a resale scheme targeting other users. By November 2023, Seow had established multiple social media accounts specifically to advertise and distribute a massive digital repository of sexual material, marking a deliberate shift from consumption to professionalized distribution.

Utilizing Cloud Infrastructure for Massive Content Distribution

The scale of the operation was facilitated by the strategic use of file hosting services and encrypted messaging apps. Seow organized his stolen and purchased content into a folder titled "SG Galore," which occupied approximately 1.2 terabytes of data across 26,864 videos and 128,308 images. To manage transactions, he moved interested buyers from public Tumblr posts to private Telegram conversations, where he utilized template messages to market various subfolders. This methodology allowed him to efficiently handle 180 separate transactions over a six-month window, reflecting a high level of premeditation and organizational intent.

Financial Escalation and State Forfeiture

As the demand for his illicit archive grew, Seow significantly increased his pricing structure to maximize profits. Initially charging S$50 for access to the media folders, he eventually raised his rates to S$200 per transaction. By the time law enforcement intervened in August 2024, Seow had collected S$13,690 via digital payment platforms. Following his arrest and the freezing of his financial assets, the court ordered the full forfeiture of these funds to the state, as Seow did not contest the seizure of the criminal proceeds held within his bank account.
