A New Chapter in Netball Leadership

The leadership of Netball New Zealand (NNZ) and the Silver Ferns has officially entered a period of reconciliation following the most unstable era in the sport's domestic history. Standing side by side at a press conference in Auckland, head coach Dame Noeline Taurua and interim CEO Jane Patterson demonstrated a necessary show of unity. This appearance follows nearly six months of internal friction that began with the high-profile suspension of Taurua in September 2024 over high-performance environment concerns. Patterson, who took the helm in January after the resignation of Jennie Wyllie, stated that her first priority was to "turn a new leaf" through direct communication and a genuine connection with the world-class coach.

Addressing the Organizational Exodus

The "reinvigorated" relationship comes after a comprehensive overhaul of the sport’s governing body. The fallout from the 2024 coaching saga led to a series of resignations at the highest levels, including the departure of chairperson Matt Whineray and several other board members in early 2026. This leadership vacuum necessitated a shift in organizational culture, with Patterson acknowledging the significant reputational damage sustained during the previous year. The interim CEO has committed to a strategy that prioritizes people and communication, aiming to rebuild the confidence of the netball community and stakeholders before the team departs for the United Kingdom.

Strategic Coaching Appointments for Glasgow

To bolster the Silver Ferns' technical depth, NNZ has appointed highly regarded Australian coach Briony Akle as Taurua’s assistant for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July. This cross-Tasman collaboration is seen as a strategic move to provide fresh perspectives to a program that has been in flux. Additionally, Chelsea Lane—whose background includes executive roles in the NBA—has been integrated as the head of performance. Taurua expressed significant optimism regarding Lane’s involvement, noting that her vast knowledge base is already being utilized to "tweak" the high-performance environment and address the player concerns that initially sparked the 2024 crisis.
