Ceasefire Marred by Allegations of War Crimes and Drone Strikes

What was intended as a brief cessation of hostilities for Orthodox Easter has instead become a flashpoint for fresh allegations of military misconduct. Since the truce commenced on Saturday afternoon, the Ukrainian military claims Russian forces have committed 2,299 violations. Most notably, prosecutors in the Kharkiv region have opened an investigation into the reported execution of four disarmed Ukrainian soldiers. Drone footage released by Kyiv appears to show four bodies in a clearing, an incident described by local authorities as a "grave violation of international humanitarian law."

Moscow Reports Thwarted Ukrainian Counter-Attacks

The Russian Defence Ministry has countered with its own list of 1,971 violations, alleging that Ukrainian forces utilized the ceasefire to launch three overnight attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Russian officials also stated that their forces "thwarted" four attempts by Ukrainian troops to advance in the Sumy and Donetsk sectors. While the Kremlin initially agreed to the Easter truce after months of resisting similar requests, it has flatly rejected President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal to extend the cessation of fighting to facilitate peace negotiations.

Prisoner Exchange Provides Rare Moment of Cooperation

Despite the widespread reports of violence, both nations successfully conducted a significant prisoner swap on Saturday. Each side returned 175 prisoners of war, a group that included seven civilians from each country. While such exchanges have occurred periodically throughout the conflict, this latest swap served as the only tangible sign of diplomatic coordination during the Easter period. However, the goodwill did not translate to the frontlines, where local authorities in Sumy reported that a Russian drone struck an ambulance, injuring three medical personnel.
