The Midnight Assault on Kukareta

A major security threat in the North East was averted in the early hours of Thursday as Nigerian troops successfully disrupted a coordinated insurgent strike. Members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched an attack on the Kukareta community shortly after midnight, aiming to overrun the area under the cover of darkness. However, soldiers from Sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai mounted a fierce resistance, engaging the militants in a sustained firefight that lasted until approximately 3:00 a.m.

Neutralization of a High Value Target

Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Theatre Commander of North East Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed the death of a senior ISWAP leader during the engagement. The commander, identified as Abu Umar Bundi Munzir, was killed alongside 24 other fighters as the military repelled the offensive. This loss represents a significant blow to the insurgent group's regional command structure, as Munzir was reportedly overseeing the tactical execution of the failed raid.

Capture and Battlefield Exploitation

In addition to the 25 insurgents killed, military officials confirmed that one militant was taken alive during the operation. Following the retreat of the surviving terrorists, troops conducted a thorough exploitation of the battlefield. This search led to the discovery of blood trails and medical supplies along escape routes, suggesting that many of the fleeing fighters sustained serious injuries during their chaotic withdrawal from the Kukareta area.
