Senator Simon Lalong, representing Plateau South, has formally identified the local government system as the primary engine for Nigeria’s socio-economic evolution. Speaking at the inauguration of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) leadership, Lalong asserted that national progress is fundamentally tied to the efficacy of the third tier of government. According to the Senator, the proximity of local councils to the citizenry makes them the most viable vehicle for delivering essential services in healthcare, education, and agriculture. He argued that without an empowered local administrative structure, federal initiatives struggle to achieve the desired transformative impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The National Assembly is currently prioritizing constitutional amendments aimed at resolving the long-standing obstacles to local government autonomy. Lalong revealed that the legislative body is working to institutionalize reforms that would protect the financial and administrative independence of the 774 local government areas. The newly inaugurated Acting National President of ALGON, Hon.
