Defending the Autonomy of the Electoral Umpire
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has formally dismissed allegations that the ruling All Progressives Congress is working to undermine opposition parties by manipulating the electoral system. Speaking at the National Assembly lobby in Abuja during his 66th birthday celebrations, the lawmaker characterized claims of interference as frivolous and damaging to the international image of Nigeria’s democracy. Kalu emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission remains a sovereign institution, noting that its current leadership under Professor Joash Amupitan deserves institutional respect rather than political skepticism.
Voluntary Political Realignment and Party Growth
Addressing concerns regarding the defection of opposition politicians and governors to the APC, Kalu maintained that party membership is strictly a matter of personal choice and negotiation. He stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never pressured or coerced any political actor to join the ruling party. According to the Senator, governors who choose to align with the APC do so based on independent strategic assessments, asserting that the party operates as an open platform where individuals are free to join or depart based on their own political interests.
Permutations for Future Legislative Leadership
Regarding speculations about the 2027 general elections and the potential zoning of the Senate Presidency to the South East, Kalu indicated that such decisions remain the exclusive prerogative of the APC leadership. While he expressed a willingness to serve in any capacity assigned by the party, he clarified that he is not currently lobbying for the position. He urged political observers to focus on the broader goals of national stability rather than individual aspirations or unconfirmed zoning arrangements.
