The Call for Executive Transparency
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has formally urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate regular national briefings regarding the ongoing struggle against insurgency and banditry. In a statement released on Sunday, the lawmaker emphasized that the Nigerian populace requires direct communication from the Presidency to maintain confidence in the state's security apparatus. This demand for transparency comes as a response to heightened public outrage following a string of violent incidents in the North East, suggesting that the current communication gap is undermining the government’s efforts to project control.
The Ngoshe Community Massacre
The urgency of Ndume’s request is underscored by a devastating coordinated assault on the Ngoshe community in the Gwoza Local Government Area. Last Wednesday, insurgents identified as members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province launched a multi pronged attack, first targeting a military base belonging to the 82 Division Task Force Battalion. The violence subsequently spilled into the local township and a camp for Internally Displaced Persons, resulting in the deaths of the town's chief imam, several soldiers, and multiple community elders.
Strategic Intelligence and Insurgent Routes
Ndume, who is a native of the affected area, provided a tactical assessment of how the massacre was carried out, noting that the attackers utilized well known routes. According to the Senator, the insurgents descended from the Mandara Mountains with support from units based in the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad regions. He argued that the success of such a large scale operation indicates a high level of coordination among terrorist factions, necessitating a more robust and sustained military presence in these specific geographic strongholds to prevent future incursions.
