Rescreening and Terminal Disruption
The breach, which occurred during the busy morning peak, required all passengers already in the departure lounge to exit and pass through security checkpoints a second time. By 9:00 am, wait times for security checks reached approximately one hour, with queues stretching deep into the domestic terminal.
Passengers reported being informed via public announcements that they must scan their bags again to resolve the breach. While the "unscreened" individual was identified and the immediate threat resolved, Aviation Security (AvSec) protocols mandated the full rescreening to ensure no prohibited items had entered the secure zone.
Impact on Arriving and Departing Flights
The ripple effect of the security alert extended to the tarmac. Incoming flights were held on the taxiway, with passengers on at least one flight from Wellington reporting a 40-minute wait inside the aircraft after landing.
Departures: More than a dozen domestic flights appeared as "delayed" on the Auckland Airport website throughout the morning.
