Rejecting the Conventional Coalition Model

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has signaled a major departure from the prevailing strategy of Nigerian opposition parties. Prince Adewole Adebayo, the party's former presidential candidate, dismissed the effectiveness of elite political alliances in unseating the ruling party. According to Adebayo, the widely held belief that fragmented opposition parties must unite is a fallacy, particularly when such unions involve actors who lack shared values or personal integrity. He argued that these mergers often repeat past governance failures rather than offering a genuine alternative to the electorate.

The "Civic Coalition" Strategy

Rather than negotiating with other political leaders, the SDP is focusing on what Adebayo calls a "civic coalition." This strategy shifts the focus from professional politicians to segments of society that have historically remained inactive in the democratic process. Adebayo noted that a significant majority of registered voters did not participate in the last general election, and he believes that the path to victory in 2027 lies in addressing the reasons behind this massive voter apathy. By engaging professional bodies, grassroots organizations, and ordinary citizens, the SDP hopes to build a movement that transcends traditional political arithmetic.

Critique of Internal Party Instability

Adebayo expressed deep skepticism regarding the current state of other opposition parties involved in coalition discussions. He revealed that many recent engagements have been unproductive because parties are attempting to bring their internal leadership crises to the negotiating table. He cited instances where multiple rival factions from the same party sought coalition talks simultaneously. The SDP leader maintained that parties must first organize their internal structures and resolve primary disputes before they can be considered viable partners in any strategic alliance.
