Tragedy Strikes the Sausalito Waterfront
The quiet afternoon at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor was interrupted by a fatal maritime accident when a passenger vehicle plunged off the shoreline. Emergency responders were called to the scene near the D Dock area at approximately 2:38 PM following reports of a submerged car near Humboldt Avenue. Local authorities confirmed that a 76 year old man was behind the wheel when the vehicle entered the water, sparking a high stakes rescue operation in the cold, shallow depths of Richardson Bay.
Swift Deployment of Marine Rescue Units
The Southern Marin Fire District dive team arrived quickly to find the car resting roughly 10 feet beneath the surface. Divers were forced to enter the harbor immediately to reach the driver, who remained trapped inside the cabin while a second occupant managed to self extricate. The rescue was described as hectic, with fire crews working frantically on the pier to provide lifesaving measures once the driver was brought to the dock. One firefighter was evaluated for minor injuries sustained during the rapid response, which involved multiple marine units and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Victim Identified as Longtime Local Resident
The Marin County chief deputy coroner has officially identified the deceased driver as Brian Thayer Mullins, a resident of Sausalito. Mullins was rushed to a nearby medical facility following the harbor recovery, but he was later pronounced dead by hospital staff. The loss has sent ripples through the local community, as the victim was a well known figure in the area. Police are currently working with the coroner’s office to determine if the tragedy was the result of a mechanical failure or a personal crisis.
