"Blindsided" Creative Team and Poor Timing

The timing of Hulu’s decision was described by Gellar as "harsh," occurring on the Friday before the 2026 Oscars—a night intended to be a "victory lap" for director Chloé Zhao, whose film Hamnet was up for multiple awards. Gellar learned the project was dead just as she was preparing to take the stage for the world premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come at SXSW. The actress noted that the entire team, including Zhao and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, were completely blindsided by the move, which effectively buried months of pre-production and pilot filming.

The Vision for 'New Sunnydale' and a New Slayer

Gellar provided a glimpse into the creative direction of the reboot, which would have starred Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new, younger slayer. The series was designed to explore a "duality" between the new protagonist’s origin and where Gellar’s iconic character, Buffy Summers, is in the present day. Gellar praised Armstrong as a "superstar" and expressed deep regret that fans would not see her interpretation of the role. The pilot, which Gellar described as "craziness" to film, aimed to honor the legacy of the original 1997–2003 series while evolving the lore for a modern audience.

Support from the Original 'Buffy' Cast

Following the news, Gellar revealed that several of her former castmates reached out in solidarity. She specifically highlighted David Boreanaz, who portrayed Angel in the original series and its spinoff, as a primary source of support. The lasting relationships among the cast—which included Alyson Hannigan and James Marsters—have remained a focal point for fans, many of whom have expressed disappointment on social media regarding how the cancellation was handled by the streaming platform.
