Intelligence-Led Operation Dismantles Residential Gold Lab

In a significant blow to illegal mining syndicates in Mpumalanga, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has dismantled a clandestine gold processing facility in Barberton. Acting on credible intelligence, officers raided a local residence on Friday, uncovering a comprehensive setup dedicated to the processing, melting, and refining of gold. The operation, aimed at curbing the illegal trade of precious metals, resulted in the arrest of two middle-aged men who were allegedly managing the facility.

Seizure of Chemicals, Equipment, and Illegal Weaponry

The raid led to the discovery of high-end gold processing equipment and a variety of chemicals used in the refining process. In addition to a substantial amount of gold-bearing material, police recovered two unlicensed firearms and a cache of ammunition. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, the presence of these weapons indicates the violent nature of the criminal networks associated with "zama zama" activities and illicit mineral trade in the region.

Charges and Upcoming Court Appearance

The two suspects, whose identities have not yet been released, face multiple counts including the contravention of the Precious Metals Act and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They remain in custody and are expected to make their first appearance in the Barberton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 28. Police have indicated that the current arrests are likely just the beginning, as the investigation shifts toward identifying the broader network responsible for supplying the raw materials and distributing the refined gold.
