Speaking at the 2026 Abuja Dialogue held at the Presidential Villa, Sanwo-Olu argued that while physical investments in roads, rail, and healthcare are visible and vital, they are ultimately unsustainable without a "visionary leadership pipeline" to manage them. He emphasized that in Lagos, leadership development is funded as a core governance pillar because the "return on investment" is the long-term survival of the state’s institutions.

The Economic Cost of Failed Preparation

The Governor issued a stark warning regarding the consequences of failing to equip youth for governance. According to Sanwo-Olu, the lack of structured transition systems has fueled a significant "brain drain," where Nigeria’s top talent is recruited to strengthen other nations while domestic institutions suffer from a talent deficit. He noted that the cost of fixing a cycle of leadership deficits is far higher than the investment required to prevent them. By establishing initiatives like the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Lagos aims to create a "talent incubator" that integrates young professionals into public-sector processes, ensuring they are prepared for the complexities of modern governance.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima echoed these sentiments, stressing that the transition of power should not be viewed as a "ceremonial handover" but as a deliberate and intentional process of integration. He noted that national progress is inextricably linked to the reliability of its leadership pipeline, which must be built through mentorship and strict adherence to standards. The summit, themed ‘Scaling Excellence: Youth Leadership as Strategic Infrastructure’, sought to examine how the energy of Nigeria's youth can be productively channeled into policy-making and public administration to prevent the systemic collapse of critical infrastructure.
